Land of Geysers to Help California

Technical expertise from Iceland may help California to explore a new source of energy in earth heat.

SACRAMENTO, California, US, 2001-08-27 [SolarAccess.com] Technical expertise from Iceland may help California to explore a new source of energy in earth heat. The California Technology, Trade & Commerce Agency has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Iceland Ministry of Industry & Commerce, to launch a mutual exchange of knowledge to promote the cooperative development of environmentally sound energy resources. The MOU seeks to expand California’s energy alternatives in response to the current energy situation, noting that the development of geothermal, solar, hydropower and other renewable sources will help to reduce the strain of the state’s overtaxed electricity grid. “This is a unique partnership that will help California take advantage of Iceland’s innovations in sustainable energy resources,” says Lon Hatamiya of CTTCA. “It ensures that California will remain on the cutting edge of alternative energy resource development, and it demonstrates the state’s commitment to clean air and water.” California has a vast storehouse of energy in the form of heat from the earth that has yet to be harnessed. Iceland is a world leader in developing this resource and captures large amounts of energy from geothermal sources. The Iceland ministry has agreed to share this technology, as well as help develop alternative California energy solutions in an environmentally sound manner.
