[RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Algonquin Power Income Fund of Ontario has purchased 12 landfill-gas (LFG) powered generating stations across the United States for CAD 16.9 million (US $13.4 million) representing approximately 36 MW of installed capacity. The majority of the LFG facilities were commissioned in the late 1990s, and the electricity produced is currently sold to a number of large utilities pursuant to long-term power purchase agreements. Approximately 66 percent of the installed capacity is located at large landfills, which are continuing to accept waste. Three regional landfills in the southern California basin are part of the purchase, and the facilities are permitted for operation for at least 25 years. Substantial opportunity exists for expansion of the generating capacity of these facilities because gas production should increase as additional waste is placed at the sites.
