Green Energy Company Fans Out Texas Heat

Green Mountain Energy Company and the Salvation Army of Dallas, Texas, have joined forces to help low-income families in the Dallas area fight the blistering summertime heat. The “Fans for Life” program begins August 23rd and runs for four weeks through September 20th. For every new residential customer Green Mountain Energy successfully enrolls for its cleaner electricity service at a Dallas area event during this time period, a US$12 donation will be made to purchase fans for low-income families.

Austin, Texas – August 22, 2003 [] “We feel this is a great way to help out the Dallas community as well as recognize our customers,” said Ross Haskell, general manager of the Texas region for Green Mountain Energy Company. ” Our customers have already helped make a difference in the way power is made by purchasing pollution-free electricity generated in part from giant wind turbines. Now they can help make a difference in someone’s life by providing a simple electric fan through their enrollment.” “The Salvation Army is pleased to partner with Green Mountain Energy Company to help elderly and low-income Texans during these hot summer months,” said Major William Mockabee, Area Commander for The Salvation Army’s Greater Dallas Metroplex Area Command. “It is gratifying to know that community-minded companies identify with our compassionate work in meeting the needs of thousands of men, women and children in the Metroplex. We couldn’t do what we do without generous donations such as this.” Green Mountain Energy says that in addition to having a positive impact on the community, their customers in Texas continue to make a difference in the way power is made by spurring the development of new renewable facilities, like the recently announced Green Mountain Energy Wind Farm at Brazos. The wind farm is tied for the second largest in the state of Texas and is in the top ten nationwide. According to Green Mountain Energy, Dallas residents have three 100 percent pollution-free options when signing up for the company’s electricity service: the Month-to-Month plan; the Reliable Rate Plan, which secures their per kilowatt hour rate for a full year of service both of which feature electricity generated from a combination of wind and water; and the 100 percent Wind Plan. The company says that by buying Green Mountain Energy electricity instead of typical system power for one year, a Texas household can prevent over 11,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution, which is as much as a typical car makes in over 13,000 miles of driving. Green Mountain Energy Company’s stated objective is to change the way power is made by selling electricity generated from sources such as wind, solar, water, geothermal, biomass and natural gas to residential, business, institutional and governmental customers. The Austin, Texas-based company currently services approximately 600,000 customers in California, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas.
