Atlanta, Georgia [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] GE Energy technology has been selected for a new, 300-megawatt (MW) class hydropower plant to be located on the Bing Lang Jiang River (Baoshan City, Yunnan Province), China. The Su Jia He Kou Hydro Power Plant will feature three high-head, vertical Francis hydro turbine-generators, each with a maximum 105-MW output, to be manufactured at GE Hydro Asia Co., Ltd.’s facility in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The power will be provided to China’s national electric grid. In addition to supplying the hydro turbines, GE will execute a model test on the units and will serve as technical advisor for the project. Shipment of the equipment to the Su Jia He Kou project site is scheduled to begin in February of 2008, with the first unit expected to enter commercial operation June 2009. China, which has the world’s largest resources for hydropower production, continues to invest in hydroelectric plants as part of its sustainable growth strategy to reduce pollution. Yunnan Province — with more than 600 rivers in six water systems — offers vast potential for hydropower development.
