Events update: A guide to just some of the main renewables events for the coming year

Renewable Energy World profiles a few of the regular renewables conferences with tradeshows — for a fuller listing, see Diary on page 209.

Organized by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),EWEC 2007 took place in Milan, in April.Covering every key aspect of the wind market, the event brought together over 3000 key players from the wind and electricity sectors for four days of intensive networking, new business development and information exchange. The conference programme included over 500 confirmed oral and poster presentations and 40 sessions in eight parallel tracks, on all aspects of the wind and electricity sectors. EWEC 2007’s tradeshow comprised over 200 leading companies involved in wind power. Visitors represent all relevant parts of the decision making chain – from engineers, purchasers and analysts to political representatives and board members. EWEC is held in a different European location each year. EWEC 2008 takes place at Brussels Expo, Belgium, 31 March–3 April 2008.

The ‘granddaddy’ of wind events, HUSUMwind takes place every second year in September, and continues to grow. With its home in the wind pioneering region of Schleswig Holstein, where north Germany meets Denmark, this event dominates the small coastal town for a week. Regular visitors know to book accommodation very early to stay in or near Husum. The 10th anniversary event of HUSUMwind expects some 500 exhibitors, on further extended exhibition grounds with 22,000 m2. HUSUMwind 2007 takes place in Husum, Germany, on 18–22 September 2007.

With 32,000 visitors in 2007, Intersolar is the largest trade fair for solar technology in Europe, focusing on photovoltaics, solar thermal technology and solar architecture. The event has transformed itself from an event primarily open to the public, to one that is clearly an international, industry event. Having been based in Freiburg, in Baden-Württemberg, for several years, the event is now moving to the larger premises offered by Munich’s trade fair centre. In 2008, 800 exhibitors will present their products and services in an exhibition area of 51,000 m2. Intersolar 2008 takes place in Munich, Germany, on 12–14 June 2008.

POWER-GEN Renewable Energy and Fuels was launched five years ago by PennWell (publishers of Renewable Energy World and organizers of the POWER-GEN events) and ACORE, the American Council on Renewable Energy, and takes place in late February or early March each year, in Las Vegas. Lively parallel conference tracks cover all renewable energy technologies, including power generation, biofuels for transportation, and heating/cooling, providing a useful cross-technology platform for debate and information. POWER-GEN Renewable Energy & Fuels attracts the biggest names in renewables to discuss technical, strategic, regulatory, structural and economic issues.Alongside the conference sessions, workshops and site visits, a large tradeshow showcases US and overseas companies. POWER-GEN Renewable Energy & Fuels 2008 is taking place from 19–21 February 2008, in Las Vegas, Nevada, US.

Renewable Energy Europe was a new launch in 2007, from PennWell (publishers of Renewable Energy World and organizers of the POWER-GEN events). REE now takes place each year under the same roof as POWER-GEN Europe, the leading European power generation event, and is unique in focusing on utility-scale renewables. The event provides conference sessions designed to meet the strategy and technology needs of utilities and other largescale power generators who have, or are introducing, renewables into their generation portfolios. An extensive tradeshow presents a wide mix of renewable power generation technologies on the same exhibition floor as POWER-GEN Europe. Renewable Energy Europe 2008 takes place in Milan, Italy, on 3–5 June 2008.

The Solar Power Conference and Expo was created in 2004 when the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) joined together in partnership to provide the US with a business-to-business solar conference and expo. With an industry growth rate of more than 40% per year, there was a need for a single event where industry could come together with potential customers, policymakers, investors, and other parties necessary for continued rapid growth. The 2007 event will have over 190 exhibiting companies, including cell and module manufacturers, inverter and other component manufacturers, material and equipment manufacturers, installers, integrators, and investors. 10,000 attendees are expected. The Solar Power Conference and Expo attracts a wide range of participants both from inside and outside the industry, with a high level of decision-makers in attendance. Solar Power Conference and Expo 2007 takes place in Long Beach, California, on 24–27 September 2007.

Hamburg Messe’s WindEnergy tradeshow event is held in Hamburg, north Germany,in May or June every second year. The first event was held in 2002, and 2008 sees the fourth. At WindEnergy 2006 over 330 companies exhibited, with 47% of them being from outside Germany, and increasing numbers (about 30%, according to Hamburg Messe) of international visitors.WindEnergy 2008 takes place in Hamburg, Germany, on 20–23 May 2008.

The American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA) ever-larger annual event took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on 3–7 June.WindPower comprises three days of conference sessions and a large tradeshow demonstrating the latest advancements in wind energy technology, including most of the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturers. There is also a small wind pavilion displaying small wind turbines for home, farm, and small business. The conference programme includes sessions on a broad range of business, policy, scientific, technical, policy, financial and other topics. The 2007 event had over 6000 attendees, up from 5000 the previous year. Sweden and the city of Jönköping will once again be the international bioenergy focal point hosting the World Bioenergy 27–29 May 2008.This major global bioenergy get-together is based on the unique ‘Taking you from Know-How to Show-How’concept, combining conference sessions, field excursions and tradeshow into one comprehensive event. Held in 2006, the 2nd edition of World Bioenergy gathered 1168 conference delegates from 60 countries from all over the world. Some 4200 persons visited the exhibition, and 64 study visits were performed at a wide range of bioenergy sites.World Bioenergy will once again be taking place in Jönköping, Sweden, on 27–29 May 2008.

The European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition 2007 takes place in Milan, Italy, from 3–7 September 2007.

17th International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC-17) will be held at the Fukuoka International Congress Center in Fukuoka, Japan from 3–7 December 2007.The Japanese PVSEC Advisory Committee has decided to hold the PVSEC-17 one year earlier than planned. This is due to the long interval between the WCPEC-3 in Osaka, in May 2003 and the PVSEC-17 and the significant international interest in Japan”s effort and success in PV. The International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC) is positioned as an international conference to take place in the Asia Pacific region every 18 months.
