Energy Conservation at Home

With this article, I intend to explain why conserving energy and increasing energy efficiency is important, even on the individual level at home.

Energy Conservation Defined

Energy conservation can be defined as any action we take towards reducing our overall consumption of energy. This is often split into two parts: Increasing the efficiency of the way we use energy and/or just using less energy (e.g. turn off electrical devices instead of using stand-by, reducing room temperature etc.).

There’s also another aspect that some mix into the term energy conservation: Replacing polluting energy sources with new renewable ones.

Why Should We Conserve Energy?

First of all is the economical standpoint of conserving energy. If you implement measures in your house that results to an overall decreased amount of energy spent you save money. This is a no-brainer. A second motivation for energy conservation, maybe the most important one, is relieving the environment for the stress we put on it by harnessing these massive amounts of energy.

The spotlight on energy conservation has increased in the last 10 years. People have started opening their eyes for how much energy and money that is actually possible to save with some of these measures. Several government founded organizations and companies that focus on informing the public on energy conservation has been created.

There are many ways and methods you can implement in your house and outside of it when it comes to energy conservation, many of which are very simple. This can be everything from switch out your regular light bulbs with energy saving ones. On the other hand, there are measures that might seem expensive at first glance, but could end up saving you a lot of money. A good example of this is starting to use biomass to fuel your car. Pros and cons of biomass energy is a good read if you are interested in this area.
