Companies Invest in More Efficient Hydro Use

Construction will start soon on a C$65 million hydroelectric facility in Canada’s eastern province.

TORONTO, Ontario, CA, 2001-10-17 [SolarAccess.com] The Exploits River Hydro Partnership project involves Fortis Inc. and Abitibi-Consolidated, whose hydro plants at Grand Falls-Windsor and Bishop’s Falls in Newfoundland, will be redeveloped to increase annual output by 140 gigawatt hours. The partnership is designed to provide Newfoundland province with additional energy output through the efficient use of existing resources. Abitibi-Consolidated will continue to use the existing generation at its newsprint mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, while the additional energy will be sold to Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro under a long-term power purchase agreement. Purchase orders for $25 million in equipment and installation will be issued soon. Redevelopment of the Bishop’s Falls hydro facility is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year, while the installation of a new 27 MW unit at the Grand Falls-Windsor plant should be completed by the end of 2003.
