Brookfield Power to Acquire Two Hydroelectric Plants in Maine

[] Brookfield Power (previously Brascan Power) plans to acquire two hydroelectric generating facilities totaling almost 40 MW of capacity from Rumford Falls Power Company, owned by NewPage Corp., for US$144 million. Located on the Androscoggin River in Maine, these run-of-the-river merchant facilities generate approximately 270 GWh of energy per year, and expand the company’s power generating capacity for New England beyond its current eight facilities already in operation on the river. The transaction is conditional on approvals of regulatory agencies and is expected to close in mid 2006.
