Briefly Noted … Hydro Energy

– BC Hydro will buy electricity from two proposed hydroelectric plants on Vancouver Island, with expectation that the plants will be in operation by 2004 under ownership of Synex Energy Resources Ltd. – The Odebrecht construction company of Brazil may build a 100 MW hydroelectric facility for US$80 million with a U.S. partner. – The government of Belize has approved construction of Chalillo dam, a hydro facility that will flood 1,100 hectares of jungle along the Macal and Raspaculo rivers in mountains near Guatemala. Critics say it will destroy the river valley ecosystems. – A delegation from Japan will visit western Kenya to examine the 60 MW Sondu Miriu hydroelectric project and the impact if the nearby forest is cut back.
