Nevada Utility Is Putting $2 Billion into Solar Power and Storage

Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary NV Energy is planning to invest $2 billion on solar power from six new utility-scale projects in Nevada representing 1 GW of capacity.

NV Energy CEO Paul Caudill said in a statement that the investment is the largest of its kind in the state’s history.

“The six new projects position NV Energy to keep its commitment to double renewable energy by 2023 and, importantly, by diversifying our state’s electricity generation portfolio, will reduce the costs to serve customers,” Caudill said.

NV Energy said that three of the six projects will include energy storage capacity.

The company plans to execute 25-year power purchase agreements for the six projects, which include:

  • Cypress Creek Renewables’ 100-MW Battle Mountain Solar Project, which includes 25 MW of battery energy storage for a four-hour period
  • NextEra Energy Resources’ 200-MW Dodge Flat Solar Energy Center, which includes 50 MW of battery energy storage for four hours
  • NextEra Energy Resources’ 100-MW Fish Springs Ranch Solar Energy Center, which includes 25 MW of battery energy storage for four hours
  • 8minutenergy Renewables’ 300-MW Eagle Shadow Mountain Solar Farm, which will be sited on land owned by the Moapa Band of Paiutes
  • Sempra Renewables’ 250-MW Copper Mountain Solar 5 project
  • Techren Solar’s 50-MW Techren Solar V project

The company will file its resource plan with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada on June 1.
