Virgin Group company to restore damaged 6.4-MW solar facility on St. Thomas

BMR Energy, a Virgin Group company and developer, owner, and operator of clean energy projects in the Caribbean and Latin America, announced today that it is starting construction of the 6.4-megawatt (MWp) Donoe Solar farm on St. Thomas. The facility is expected to be completed and enter service in the fourth quarter of this year and will sell the power […]
Solar Powered Plane Traffic Control

Solar Powered Plane Traffic Control

Power sources in Alaska often need to be on site, and always need to be reliable no matter what the weather. Northern Power Systems of Vermont is supplying three power systems to the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Capstone Ground Based Transceiver (GBT) program in Southeast Alaska, and they've added a solar photovoltaic (PV) array to one of the systems.
Utility Scale Wind Farm Dedicated in Ohio

Utility Scale Wind Farm Dedicated in Ohio

Ohio has taken a step forward on the path of renewable energy as the American Municipal Power-Ohio/Green Mountain Energy Wind Farm goes on-line. The developers said it is the first utility-scale wind energy project in the state.

Tech Tour: Orlando Convention Center 1-MW Rooftop Solar Array

On top of the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), there's a 1-megawatt array that covers an area equivalent to five football fields. The system is the largest rooftop solar array in the Southeast. Johnston Controls developed the system, which features almost 6,000 SolarWorld panels that were installed by Florida-based Solar Source.
Translucent Roof’s Properties Prove Efficient and Durable

Translucent Roof’s Properties Prove Efficient and Durable

A translucent patent-pending roofing structure allows natural, filtered daylight to penetrate living areas without the energy loss and higher heating and cooling costs associated with ordinary glass roofing inserts. Centerpoint's roofing system, said to offer "museum-quality light into your home," does not compromise in strength or durability. The selection of the new pre-assembled roofing system, according to the company, was based on the product's excellent light transmission; the ability to withstand wind loads of up to 140 mph; superior UV resistance and impact strength; lighter weight and design flexibility than glass; and exceptional sound and energy insulation. The translucent roofing system is also appropriate for roof domes, skylights, walkways, conservatories, and other building applications that need high levels of light while keeping excess heat to a minimum. Company PR follows.
New Wind Prospecting System in Development at the University of Barcelona

New Wind Prospecting System in Development at the University of Barcelona

The Faculty of Physics at the University of Barcelona (UB) has developed an innovative wind prospecting system designed to be used in marine environments. The project is based on a hot air balloon which has a module with meteorological sensors and other positioning systems that detect wind strength and direction at all times, regardless of the position of the balloon.
Stanton Solar Array Performing Above Expectations

Stanton Solar Array Performing Above Expectations

On Monday under the beating sun, about 30 POWER-GEN and Renewable Energy World attendees toured the 5.9-MW Stanton Solar Array in east Orange County. Jennifer Szaro, Renewables Manager with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC), was on hand to answer questions and offer specifics about the project.
Keep the Blades Turning

Keep the Blades Turning

Wind turbines are like every other power generation technology: where there are moving parts, there's wear and tear. Ongoing maintenance is crucial. But the source of stress on a wind turbine is unique -- constant exposure to the elements -- and utility-scale wind farm operational history is still being written.
On Track for Maximum Solar Production

On Track for Maximum Solar Production

In their efforts to deliver solar energy systems capable of maximum power production, designers consider numerous factors to ensure they install effective, reliable systems capable of optimum performance in any environment. In New England, for example, solar technologies have to operate in challenging climate conditions that range from harsh, freezing winters with frequent snowstorms to high-temperature summers. Other primary considerations In solar installations include site conditions, structural issues, panel-mounting options, and project lifecycle costs.
