Six Weeks of Solar Hot Water, Part III: Get Your Free Marketing Materials Here!

With the ASES Solar 2011 Show coming up, it is time for my third post in my “Six Weeks of Solar Hot Water” series! My earlier posts “Can you help?” and “Heroes” have generated some great engaged critical conversation. Thanks to everyone who participated and left their feedback and ideas on how to grow the Solar Hot Water industry. With those initial discussions underway, I would now like to share some free resources—videos, guides, and marketing resources—from my research into the state of solar hot water today.  The best of these links will make it into my future “Solar Hot Water Marketing Guide” PDF. Solar-tastic in China from Greenpeace China on Vimeo. A big thanks again to Alpha Thermal Systems of Webster, MA for sponsoring this industry-wide conversation on growing SHW in North America. You can find ATS at PAW booth #217 at the Solar 2011 show in Raleigh, NC starting on Wednesday. ATS has told me that they are planning a new promotion for their popular FlowCon C and C+ solar pump modules. Contact them and mention this article for an advance discount as ATS is eager to discuss the time-saving benefits of “plug and play” solar hot water with more installers. Also a note of thanks to Matt Carlson of Sunnovations for sharing his thoughts on the industry with me shortly after the first post in this series. Logo Creation Tips for Renewable Energy Companies

Lots of companies are jumping in to the clean energy space, and all of them will need logos that tell their story and set them apart from the competition. If you're with one of these companies, you're no doubt thinking, "Is there really a difference between making a logo for a clean energy company and other types of companies?" The answer is a resounding YES. Here are 5 tips every clean energy start-up should know.
Renewable Energy Video Tips

Renewable Energy Video Tips

Video customer testimonials have been used for years to sell products, but they are an especially good tool for marketers in today's renewable energy space. There are three main reasons for this:
Pay-Per-Click Advertising

Pay-Per-Click Advertising

If you were a New Jersey Solar Installer, how much would you pay to get someone in your state searching for "Home Solar System" to your website? Currently, the cost is between $1.00 and $1.50, charged to you only when the searcher clicks on your ad and arrives at your website. Exciting? It's called "Pay-Per-Click" and it can be a golden opportunity -- or a huge waste of money depending on how much you know.

How To Develop Messaging for Renewable Energy Companies

How To Develop Messaging for Renewable Energy Companies

Marketers in the renewable energy sector see a clear need for a great logo and website, but "messaging" is less well understood. Some companies might say, "Well, if I hire you to do a logo, I get a logo. But a messaging project doesn't really have a tangible deliverable." This is akin to saying to an architect, "I don't want to pay you to make a blueprint. I just want the house." The resulting structure, made without a plan, would fall to the ground at the first slight breeze.

Renewable Energy 2.0: The Value of Online Marketing

The internet is a ubiquitous part of our culture. In the last decade, we've gotten comfortable doing almost everything online, from trading stocks to sharing every detail of our personal lives. So why then are many renewable energy companies – some of the most technologically savvy companies in the world – uncomfortable with marketing on the web?
