The Basis of Sustainable Community Energy Policy

The Basis of Sustainable Community Energy Policy

Renewable energy policy and sustainable community issues place an enormous strain on society and its institutions. For good or ill, the fossil energy economy created a sense of independence. But times are changing. There is an increasing awareness that energy supply is somehow connected to nearly all aspects of modern life: diplomacy; international conflict; health care issues; environmental quality; international development; food supplies; and sustainable living conditions in general.
A Solar Teachable Moment with My Brother-in-Law

A Solar Teachable Moment with My Brother-in-Law

My brother-in-law is a green contractor and I love him dearly. But he has yet to subcontract for solar PV on any of his commercial or residential jobs, or even to buy a system for his own home, which has plenty of sun and oriented South. Now he’s buying a new home for his growing family. When I asked him […]

How Sara Palin Helps Solar and RE

Want an inexpensive way to spread the word about solar, wind, and energy efficiency to consumers and businesses? Try commenting on articles and blog posts about global warming–especially when it’s a story about Sara Palin supporting coal or oil. Say what you will about Ms. Palin, but when she speaks, people don’t necessarily listen, but they are inspired to weigh […]
Standing Firm on Clean Energy in the Political ‘Silly Season’

Standing Firm on Clean Energy in the Political ‘Silly Season’

To those of us in the industry, clean-tech deployment in the U.S. is still a long way from what it could or should be. But as was seen in last week's release of Clean Edge's 2012 State Clean Energy Index, there are plenty of signs of positive momentum, especially in light of how far the industry has come from a nascent, specialized niche a decade ago. Consider the following findings from the Index, our third annual ranking of all 50 states in clean-energy leadership in technology, policy, and capital:

Six Weeks of Solar Hot Water, Part III: Get Your Free Marketing Materials Here!

With the ASES Solar 2011 Show coming up, it is time for my third post in my “Six Weeks of Solar Hot Water” series! My earlier posts “Can you help?” and “Heroes” have generated some great engaged critical conversation. Thanks to everyone who participated and left their feedback and ideas on how to grow the Solar Hot Water industry. With those initial discussions underway, I would now like to share some free resources—videos, guides, and marketing resources—from my research into the state of solar hot water today.  The best of these links will make it into my future “Solar Hot Water Marketing Guide” PDF. Solar-tastic in China from Greenpeace China on Vimeo. A big thanks again to Alpha Thermal Systems of Webster, MA for sponsoring this industry-wide conversation on growing SHW in North America. You can find ATS at PAW booth #217 at the Solar 2011 show in Raleigh, NC starting on Wednesday. ATS has told me that they are planning a new promotion for their popular FlowCon C and C+ solar pump modules. Contact them and mention this article for an advance discount as ATS is eager to discuss the time-saving benefits of “plug and play” solar hot water with more installers. Also a note of thanks to Matt Carlson of Sunnovations for sharing his thoughts on the industry with me shortly after the first post in this series.
