US energy department wants to invest $20 million in offshore wind

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $20 million funding opportunity announcement (FOA) in offshore wind energy resource characterization and technology demonstrations.

The FOA supports offshore wind development through the improvement of energy production forecasts and demonstration of upcoming technologies not yet at commercial scale.

DOE uses FOAs to lower the cost of energy and prevent technology risk, while enabling cost-effective power.

This announcement seeks projects in the following areas:

Topic Area 1:

  • Improving wind resource characterization and modeling in the offshore wind industry to predict power output of future projects and integrate power into the grid. This project, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, hopes to improve wind resource model physics for forecasts in areas where DOE work has previously been built, in complex terrain.

Topic Area 2:

  • Demonstrating new technology that will advance offshore wind in the U.S. The proposed project should implement innovative technology at a full-scale and/or employ a methodology that has not been used commercially in the U.S. at an offshore wind project that is planned to be operational by 2025.

“Additionally, funding offshore wind projects can increase confidence in pre-commercial technologies and methodologies, paving the way for the development of a world-class U.S. offshore wind industry of the future.”
