Commercial Rooftop Agreement Takes Finland’s Solar Up a Notch

Finnish energy company Fortum today said that it won a bid to build a network of commercial rooftop solar systems that will boost Finland’s total solar power capacity from 35 MW to 45 MW.

S Group, a Finland-based group of retail and services organizations, contracted Fortum to build 40 rooftop systems across Finland.

“The entire S Group has a shared goal to use our own renewable energy to produce 80 percent of the electricity we consume in 2025,” Mikko Halonen, Managing Director, S-Voima, said in a statement. “Our sites’ electricity consumption peaks during summer, right when the sunlight lasts longer and is more intense. In the best cases, during summer we can produce enough solar energy to satisfy 100 percent of the electricity needs of one building,”

Fortum said installations will start this spring and the majority of the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
