Hybrid Wind-Storage Project Starts Up in Spain

ACCIONA Energía, a subsidiary of Madrid-based ACCIONA, this week said it started operations on a hybrid plant for storing electricity in batteries that is part of a grid-connected wind farm in Spain.

The company said that the project, which is located in Barasoain, Navarra, in northern Spain, includes two batteries in separate containers. One battery is a fast-response 1-MW/0.39-MWh system that can maintain 1 MW of power for 20 minutes, and the second battery is a slower-response 0.7-MW/0.7-MWh system that can maintain 0.7 MW for one hour.

Both batteries are of Li-ion Samsung SDI technology and are connected to an ACCIONA Windpower (Nordex Group) 3-MW wind turbine. The batteries will store energy produced by the wind turbine when required. The turbine is one of five that make up the Barasoain Experimental Wind Farm, which the company has operated since 2013.

According to ACCIONA, grid-connected storage solutions will be put in practice at the project in order to provide advanced technology services for improving the quality of the energy sent to the grid. Other applications will also be studied, including ancillary services to the electric power system or energy supply shift to match the production to periods of higher demand.
