Tesla last week said that it was selected by Southern California Edison (SCE) to provide a 20-MW/80-MWh Powerpack system at SCE’s Mira Loma substation.
The company said it was the only bidder awarded a utility-owned storage project out of an SCE solicitation for storage solutions that could be operational by the end of this year.
The solicitation followed a mandate from the California Public Utilities Commission for an accelerated procurement of energy storage to help resolve peak reliability issues in the Los Angeles basin that have resulted from a rupture last year in the Aliso Canyon natural gas reservoir.
According to Tesla, the new installation will be the largest lithium-ion battery project in the world and will reduce the need for electricity generated by natural gas.
