Off Grid Electric, a company specialising in providing electrification to rural communities, has created a US$45 million investment vehicle. New lenders include Packard Foundation, Calvert Foundation, private investor Ceniarth, and U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Development Innovation Ventures.

Enel and Powerhive will develop a minigrid system in Western Kenya for 100 villages: solar panels and wind turbines will be the main energy source with battery storage and generators as back-up.

Younicos raised $50m for expansion. New investors included First Solar and Grupo ECOS, a sustainable investment-focused private equity firm. They joined an undisclosed strategic lead investor.

LWP Property Group, an Australian property developer, has commissioned an AUD $1.1 million study to see if 7,500 new homes can run entirely off-grid. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners, a Canadian project developer with a 7-gigawatt wind and hydro portfolio across North and Latin America and Europe, will carry out the ARENA backed feasibility study.
