Less silver in DuPont’s new PV metallization pastes

DuPont Microcircuit Materials is developing formulations for a new series of DuPont Solamet photovoltaic metallization pastes with significantly reduced silver content. The lower-silver Solamet photovoltaic metallization paste system comprises frontside silver and tabbing pastes.

May 6, 2011 — DuPont Microcircuit Materials (MCM) is developing formulations for a new series of DuPont Solamet photovoltaic (PV) metallization pastes with significantly reduced silver content. This is expected to offset the rise in silver prices.

DuPont expects to commercialize the first generation of lower silver Solamet pastes later this year, and based on preliminary MCM lab evaluations, the company anticipates that the first generation products will have over 10% reduced silver content. Ongoing research could push the silver content down by as much as 20% (compared to today’s existing products).

The lower-silver Solamet photovoltaic metallization paste system is comprised of new frontside silver and tabbing pastes, which DuPont anticipates for many applications will be near drop-in replacements for current products.

“The escalating price of silver has become a key concern for our customers,” said Peter Brenner, global marketing manager, photovoltaics – DuPont Microcircuit Materials. The 2010 International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaics (ITRPV), released by the Crystalline Silicon PV Technology and Manufacturing Group (CTM), in cooperation with and in support of the SEMI PV Group, identified silver content in metallization pastes as a major area for PV cost reduction efforts.

DuPont has also approached silver content issues by lowering the amount of silver-based paste used per solar cell. DuPont Solamet PV17A, launched at SNEC in February, substantially reduces the amount of paste needed to produce a solar cell.

MCM began developing non-precious metal thick film compositions for low-cost applications in the early 1980s. DuPont MCM has over 40 years of experience in the development, manufacture, sale and support of specialized thick film compositions for a wide variety of electronic applications in the photovoltaic, display, automotive, biomedical, industrial, military and telecommunications markets.
