Evergreen Solar installs cam followers from Intech

Evergreen Solar incorporated fourteen iCamFollowers manufactured by Intech in each of its >400 furnaces, used for the manufacture of photovoltaic (PV) solar wafers, cells, and panels, after discovering maintenance and performance issues with standard cam followers.

The company was concerned with increases in maintenance and repair costs, as well as down time caused by excessive wear of Click to Enlargecommercial cam followers with plastic sleeves. Metal cam followers could not be used as they generate metal particles and require lubrication that would contaminate the process.

Intech’s iCamFollower components are precision machined from the company’s durable Intech Power-Core material and are designed to withstand 100 million rolling cycles. Intech engineers used a proprietary cam follower life expectancy calculation to ensure long wear life in the harsh chemical environment found inside the furnaces.

Intech’s iCamFollowers operate lubrication free and eliminate rail wear. They are resistant to flat development, resistant to harsh chemicals, and greatly reduce noise. According to Doug Miller, mechanical engineer for Evergreen, “All of the standard cam followers we bought were failing.
