March 9, 2011 — Can the electric power system be perfected? The Renewable Energy World Conference and Expo, collocated with the Photovoltaics World Conference and Expo, March 8-10 in Tampa, FL, kicked off with a keynote from Kurt E. Yeager, executive director of the Galvin Electricity Initiative. Yeager works with electricity experts, innovators and entrepreneurs to design and build Perfect Power System models of a smart, efficient electric power system.

Photovoltaics World senior technical editor Debra Vogler blogged about Yeager’s keynote address from the show. Yeager calls for integrating the electricity grids, and diverse generation and storage resources, into a smart self-healing grid, she reports. She also summarizes Yeager’s call for turning buildings from “power pigs” to “power plants.” Read Vogler’s report here: “Electric” keynote address by Kurt Yeager on transforming the grid for the 21st century.

He previously served as president and CEO of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), spending 30 years with the organization. Under his leadership, EPRI evolved from a nonprofit industry think tank to a family of companies that undertake proprietary and collaborative R&D for the electric power industry in the US and 40 other countries. Yeager also guided an industry-wide collaborative effort to address challenges and plan for the future of electric power.

Yeager has also served as director of energy research and development planning for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Research. He holds a bachelor degree from Kenyon College and completed post-graduate studies in chemistry and physics at Ohio State and the University of California, Davis. He has also completed post-graduate management programs at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance.

Yeager is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and its Industry Advisory Board, and a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development. He has served on the executive board of the National Coal Council and the boards of the U.S. Energy Association, and the National Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing.
