Quebec to Invest Billions to Boost Hydropower Capacity

Quebec plans to spend an additional C$32 billion by 2035 to expand hydropower capacity and increase sales to the U.S., wire services reported.

Provincially-owned utility Hydro-Quebec has already budgeted C$25 billion to build hydroelectric projects and transmission lines that will help it add 4,500 megawatts of capacity by 2015, wire services reported.

Recently, a pair of Vermont utilities signed a memorandum of understanding with Hydro-Quebec, setting the stage for a new power supply contract for Vermont customers.

The C$32 billion to be spent from 2016 to 2035 would boost Hydro-Quebec’s potential output by 3,500 more megawatts, wire reports indicate.
