SEAT To Build 10-MW Solar PV System

Early next year, Spanish car manufacturer, SEAT will move forward with plans for its “SEAT al Sol” project, which is aimed at generating solar energy at the company’s Martorell factory. This project has been developed in collaboration with GA-Solar, which belongs to the GESTAMP Corporation.

The idea is to set up building integrated photovoltaics on the workshops and a factory covering area of 320,000m². By installing more than 10 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic panels, the system will generate more than 13 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The project has already been pre-registered with the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, in order to qualify for Spain’s feed-in tariff, and construction on the first phase, with a capacity of 4 MW, is set to begin in early 2010 and will be fully operational before the end of the year.

As soon as the first phase is up and running, SEAT’s Martorell solar power plant will be the second-largest building integrated photovoltaic facility of its kind in Spain and one of the largest in Europe in terms of capacity.
