Solar Power Plan for Sakai City Announced

Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc. and Sharp Corporation have agreed to cooperate on the Sakai City Waterfront Mega Solar Power Generation Plan in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Under the plan, solar power generation is planned at two sites one with a 10-megawatt (MW) capacity and one with a 9-MW capacity.

The first facility will be built by Kansai Electric in Sakai’s No. 7-3 District, on an industrial waste landfill in Nishi Ward, Sakai City. That project will produce 10 MW of power. The second facility will be built at the Sakai Manufacturing Complex by Sharp and Kansai Electric. It will produce 9 MW of power.

The two companies are currently working out the details of the running of these solar power facilities. Sharp intends to use thin-film silicon solar modules for the projects, which will be produced its thin-film plant that is scheduled to go online in March 2010.
