Government Accountability Office Says Energy Needs Bigger Budget

Washington, DC [BusinessWeek] The Energy Department needs more money in order to find ways to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil, and mitigate the environmental harm caused by burning fossil fuels, the investigative arm of Congress said Friday. Adjusting for inflation, the department’s research and development budget for renewable, fossil, and nuclear energy technologies fell by 85.6 percent between 1978 and 2005, when funding stood at $793 million. And less money has led to a narrower focus on alternatives to fossil fuels, such as ethanol, wind, and solar technologies, the Government Accountability Office said in a report. … But the news was not all bad.
