Seattle, Washington [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Seattle Steam Co.’s biomass project was named one of 18 initiatives in the Report and Recommendations issued by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickles’ Green Ribbon Commission on Climate Protection. The company’s plan is to replace one of its existing natural gas boilers with one that uses a renewable energy product — recycled wood. The company projects that using wood as a fuel would reduce carbon dioxide emissions — a known contributor to greenhouse gases and global warming — by more than 50,000 tons annually. Seattle Steam, founded in 1893, provides steam for space heating and domestic hot water to 175 downtown Seattle customers, including most governmental facilities, many of Seattle’s largest skyscrapers, hotels and the three major hospitals.
