Hydrogen Vehicles Working in European Hospitals & Ports

The first batch of six hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has been put to work in hospitals, ports, municipalities, waste plants and similar applications in Europe. The hydrogen truck (H2 Truck) was released by Danish based companies H2 Logic and A. Flensborg in fall 2005, and is one of the first small vehicles on the commercial market.

H2 Logic developed a Fuel Cell Power Unit that incorporates a technology that effectively doubles the storage capacity, compared to existing technologies. The refilling of hydrogen takes only a few minutes as compared to the 6-8 hours of charging that is often necessary with existing batteries. “We have the first six H2 Trucks driving in five different locations, and this will give U.S. real-time drive experience, which will provide crucial data, before we can optimize later versions of the H2 Truck and other niche transport applications,” said Jacob Hansen, Director for H2 Logic. Statistics on the H2 Truck include a 2 kW DC motor, 1.5 kW PEM Fuel Cell, 4000 liters of onboard hydrogen storage, 6-8 hours drive time on batteries, 12-16 hours drive time on hydrogen; the refilling of hydrogen takes less than two minutes, uses a 230V/110V AV outlet, has 1000 W output and 2000 W peak, and the hydrogen can be stored in metal hydrides. Because the H2 Truck is not refilled in the traditional sense of the term, H2 Logic has developed a Filling Station to complement the H2 Truck. Hydrogen canisters, which resemble briefcases, are interchanged like a battery, and require approximately 30 minutes recharge/refill time. Since the pressure is at a maximum of 20 bars within the system, the concept is said to be complete and safe. Both the H2 Truck and the Filling Station are CE certified.
