[RenewableEnergyAccess.com] A combination of digester gas and a single-unit fuel cell power plant has garnered a Green Globe Award for FuelCell Energy of Connecticut. FuelCell Energy received the Leader in Alternative Energy award from King County in Washington State, where it has worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the fuel cell project. The DFC1500 operates with methane gas recovered from the anaerobic digester at King County’s South Treatment Plant in Renton, Washington. The plant and provides one megawatt of electricity for the wastewater treatment facility to run some of the treatment plant equipment. Waste heat from the fuel cell plant is used to produce hot water for the treatment facility. Industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities with anaerobic gas digesters present an important opportunity for FuelCell Energy. Wastewater treatment gas is a renewable fuel eligible for government incentive funding for project installations throughout the world.
