Environment The latest destinations to make a play for ecotourism dollars aren’t the usual suspects. Once thought of as the purview of gorp-eating do-gooders, “nature tourism” now accounts for one in five tourists worldwide, according to the Washington, D.C. group Conservation International. Of course, tour operators and hotels find it easy being green – or at least claiming to be – since there’s no set of international standards dictating what ecotourism actually is. However, the International Ecotourism Society, a nongovernmental organization with members in more than 70 countries, defines it as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” Vague, but it’s a start
