A Million Miles of Testing for Electric Hybrids

July 22, 2004 [] Someone got a good deal on a hybrid now that the U.S. Department of Energy, completed 1 million miles of hybrid electric vehicle fleet testing through its Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity (AVTA). The testing is done at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) and includes collecting data on miles-per-gallon fuel use, vehicle maintenance and vehicle repairs. Each hybrid electric vehicle car has a defined mission that it is driven in. At testing completion, the vehicles are sold and the total lifecycle costs; including depreciation, fuel, operating, maintenance and repair costs, are calculated and reported. INEEL tested four Honda Civics, six Honda Insights, six Toyota Prius 2002 and 2003 models, and two Toyota Prius 2004 models.
