Energy Targets Miss the Mark

Hydro Tasmania expressed disappointment with the Federal Government’s White Paper on Energy, particularly its refusal to increase the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET). Chief Executive Officer Geoff Willis said that by retaining the status quo on MRET, the Federal Government was hampering further investment in the renewable energy sector, and would slow the utility’s planned investments in wind farms past 2007.

Hobart, Tasmania – July 7, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] While measures to support further research and development in the renewable energy sector were part of the white paper, they might not be enough to move Australia with the rest of the world for incentives to increase renewable energy generation. Willis said Hydro would continue to work with the renewable energy sector to try and achieve an expansion of the MRET scheme.
