Complementing their environmentally-oriented research and attitudes, Canada’s Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS) located in Sidney, British Columbia, installed a solar electric system on their research facility to provide clean, renewable energy to the facility.Victoria, British Columbia – June 2, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] large enough to generate up to 7000 kWhr/year or a green house gas reduction of an estimated 8.25 tons/year if the energy had been produced by fossil fuel, according to SPS Energy Solutions, that installed the 7.02 kW grid-tie system. The use of the solar energy will reduce dependency on the electrical utility and lower IOS’s monthly power bills. The energy from the new systems will go directly back into the building’s electrical grid. “The grid tie system at IOS is a good example of how solar power can be beautifully integrated into commercial buildings’, said Dave Egles, President of SPS Energy Solutions. “We hope the precedent set by progressive people at the DFO will lead the way to greener choices by other organizations.” The system consists of fifty-four 130 W solar panels and three 2500 W inverters, and was installed on the roof of one of the buildings. The installation was completed in three days by SPS personnel. The IOS is one of just nine major scientific facilities operated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (The facility is responsible for conducting research on the coastal waters of BC, the Northeastern Pacific, the western Canadian Arctic and navigable fresh waters as far east as the BC/Alberta border. Each year, the facility attracts the public and federal visitors on business. The installation of the grid tie system further demonstrates IOS’s positive environmental commitment. “This initiative is an excellent example of how DFO is making progress with reducing green house gas emissions as part of the Federal House in Order Program”, said Jim Coldwell, IOS Facility Manager.
