Rhode Island Governor Carcieri announced that the State will make a purchase of clean, renewable power for the State House. The State Energy Office will purchase renewable energy certificates (REC’s) to generate 100% of the electricity used at the State House for 5 years.Providence, Rhode Island – April 2, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] REC’s represent the price difference between the cost of electricity from renewable energy sources and the cost of electricity from traditional fuel sources. The estimated cost of this purchase over the five year period is estimated to be approximately $210,000, and will support the installation of the equivalent of one large wind turbine. The incremental cost of green power for the State House will be covered by the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Fund. The purchase will be contracted for by the State Energy Office through a competitive solicitation to green power providers currently active in the State. “This is a signal to Rhode Islanders that clean, renewable energy is here, it is available, and it is strong enough to power a building like the State House,” said Carcieri. “Hopefully, this will help encourage people throughout Rhode Island to voluntarily increase their use of cleaner sources of energy.” Residential and small commercial electricity consumers will have the option to purchase green power through their Narragansett Electric bill starting in April, 2004. The Narragansett Electric program is called Green Up.
