Joint Venture for 66 MW Australian Wind Farm

In April this year the Spain-based renewable energy company, EHN will begin development of its first wind power project in Australia with the construction of the 66 MW Cathedral Rocks wind farm, through a joint venture (50%) with the Australian renewable electricity generator Hydro Tasmania.

Navarre, Spain – March 4, 2004 [] The wind farm, located on the Eyre Peninsula in the state of South Australia, will have thirty-three 2 MW V-80 Vestas turbines. The investment in the wind farm is 66.3 million euros (US$80 million). Development approval has already been obtained for the construction of the facility from the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula and an agreement was signed with the distribution utility ElectraNet for the connection of the wind farm to the South Australia grid via a substation in the nearby locality of Port Lincoln. Hydro Tasmania is the first renewables generator in Australia with around 60% of the total sector. It has 28 hydro power plants totalling 2,263 MW, a 240 MW thermal power station, and wind farms in operation and under construction (total 64.75 MW). This will be EHN’s first wind power development in Australia, a continent with considerable wind power resources and excellent growth prospects, given that Australia needs to give renewables a great boost in the light of its generation model, which is currently 90% dependent on fossil fuels. The country also has the MRET (mandatory renewable energy target) provision to aim for. The MRET is essentially a non-binding Renewable Portfolio Standard, calling on a certain percentage of renewable energy generation. EHN has other wind energy projects at an advanced stage of development and under investigation in Australia, in addition to the Cathedral Rocks project. To date EHN has either installed or is constructing 1,924 MW in the field of renewable energies. Of this figure almost 900 MW belong to the group. In wind energy it has implemented (for itself or other companies) 55 wind farms – almost all of them managed by the company- and has another 7 under construction, totalling 1,835 MW. It has 20 small hydro plants, a 25 MW biomass plant from straw combustion and the largest photovoltaic solar plant in Spain in terms of capacity (1.2 MW). It is also building a biodiesel plant and has its own wind turbine manufacturing facility.
