Wind Power Gets Transmission Boost

September 23, 2003 [solarAccess.com] Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) announced recently that the Senate approved a measure late Tuesday to set the stage for what could be a major increase in transmission capability for the North Dakota’s growing wind power industry. Senator Dorgan’s amendment to the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill provides US$750,000 for a study to be conducted by the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) to determine where best to locate new transmission facilities to handle 500 MW of wind power from North and South Dakota – enough electricity for the typical use of 500,000 homes. The bill also specifies that WAPA customers will not have to pay back the cost of the study in the form of higher power bills.
