August 7, 2003[SolarAccess.com] Maui Electric Company (MECO), of Hawaii, has been selected to receive over $1.1 million in funds from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the installation of renewable energy solar water heating systems on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. MECO will provide $300,000 in rebates under its Residential Efficient Water Heating program, as well as project coordination and outreach for the project. MECO says that over 4000 households are already benefiting from solar power.MECO’s grant is expected to help Molokai households reduce energy use by about 45 percent.
