Mid-Sized Wind Turbine for Onsite Power

A western New York company has begun reaping the benefits of Renewable Energy since a Fuhrlaender 250 kW wind turbine was installed by Rhode Island-based Lorax Energy Systems at Harbec Plastics, an injection molding facility in Ontario, New York.

Ontario, New York – January 7, 2003 [SolarAccess.com] The wind turbine, which will generate about 450,000 kWh annually – or about a third of the power used by the facility – has blades which are 30 meters in diameter on a 40 meter tower. Power generated by the wind turbine will save the facility about US$50,000 a year. This installation provides a good example of the benefits that are available from siting mid-sized wind turbines individually in distributed generation applications. In addition to immediate power cost savings, the facility will be enjoy a long term, low cost, non-polluting sustainable energy source, with the additional dramatic and visual symbol that green power is utilized in the company’s manufacturing processes and in its products. “I think it’s beautiful, it looks like a gentle giant standing ready to give our company the energy security we need for our future strength and stability,” said Bob Bechtold, president of Harbec. A Lorax Energy Systems construction crew assembled and raised the turbine in less than a week to with the help of two Fuhrlaender factory technicians and a number of Harbec Plastics employees. “We were lucky to have light winds for the crane to lift the nacelle and rotor and strong winds for startup and testing of the turbine on the next day,” said Henry duPont, the Lorax Energy Systems Managing Director. “In spite of the challenging winter weather, the installation went very well.” Lorax Energy Systems, which specializes in distributed power generation solutions, is currently assisting a number of other manufacturing facilities, schools, municipal water treatment plants, and farms with their own wind turbine installations ranging in size from 30 to 1250 kW. Future wind turbine installation locations range from the northeast to across the continental US to Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean.
