A fire station in Denver, Colorado will be the first in the state to receive power from a fuel cell system.Denver, Colorado – December 5, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] The Colorado Governor’s Office of Energy Management and Conservation (OEMC), Plug Power Inc., and the city of Denver were instrumental in the installation of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system at Denver’s Washington Park Fire Station. Plug Power’s PEM fuel cell system, fueled by natural gas, will provide a portion of the facilities’ electricity and heat, essential for the operation of the fire station’s computers, lights and garage doors. The demonstration system is capable of generating 5 kW of electricity and 9 kW of heat. The fire station’s fuel cell demonstration is open to the public and is scheduled to operate for one year. After that, Plug Power will replace the fire station’s fuel cell with a future production model. Alpha Technologies installed the fuel cell and will be responsible for its operation for the duration of the project.
