National Group Denounces New Energy Bill Changes

October 4, 2002 [] The Natural Resources Defense Council calls the new energy bill currently being finalized in Congress “a sham that will actually increase gasoline consumption.” The NRDC, a 500,000 member, national, non-profit organization of scientists, lawyers and environmental specialists, contends that the original bill has been dramatically weakened by recent changes that will delay a fuel economy provision until 2012, and extend a “loophole” for auto manufacturers that allows them to build less efficient trucks and sport utility vehicles.
