The Vauxhall Cross Transport Interchange is set to incorporate the latest solar design and state of the art technology. One of London’s key areas of urban regeneration, Vauxhall Cross reaches out to the Sun and will generate electricity for the 24-hour bus station with PV.London, England – August 8, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] Solar Century is working with Arup Associates and acting as the solar design consultants, suppliers and installation managers of this landmark solar scheme. The solar technology used is so cutting-edge that it has never been used before in the UK. Solar Century are providing 168 ‘hybrid’ solar modules for the cantilevered roof to the interchange’s canopy. These are currently the world’s most efficient solar modules that are commercially available (due to the unique combination of the latest monocrystalline and amorphous silicon technology, ideally suited to cloudy London). The modules add a deep blue to the cantilevered arms, which are 40 m long and will be a striking addition to the landscape. “When the architects and environmental engineers from Arup Associates came to us, we were very excited,” said David Ley of Solar Century. “Here was an opportunity to demonstrate the efficiencies of the photovoltaic revolution. A high profile project, seen by tens of thousands of people every day, which needed to be a symbol of regeneration. Together, we came up with a design to put a solar power plant on the cantilevered arms of the canopy. These reach up to the sun and demonstrate the GLA’s energy strategy, by providing clean, environmentally sound, emission free electricity.” The Interchange is being built for Transport for London. “What we have here,” said David Ley is an excellent example of using Renewable Energy in original design work. It will be the first use of this hybrid solar module in the UK.” The DTI has just announced 65 percent grant funding of the installation of solar PV modules for this project.
