New Wind Generator Output Stabilizer

May 30, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. has developed equipment that can stabilize the output of wind power generators regardless of the amount of wind available, according to the company. IHI’s new equipment, which comprises a high-speed iron flywheel and an induction motor/generator, eliminates output fluctuation. Power generated when the wind is strong drives the induction unit as a motor, transferring electrical energy to the flywheel, where it is stored as kinetic energy. When the wind dies down, the kinetic energy of the flywheel powers the induction unit as a generator, releasing the stored energy as electricity.
