Grocery Chain Introduces Solar Power

Lunardi’s, the Bay Area’s favorite neighborhood supermarket and PowerLight Corporation, the leading manufacturer of commercial solar electric products, have teamed up with Nextek Power Systems to create an integrated on site solar electric power and lighting system.

BURLINGAME, California – May 29, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] Under the management of Rakar Industries, the system was recently installed at the Lunardi’s in Burlingame, California making it one of the nation’s first grocery chains to introduce solar energy as its primary lighting power source. The 33 kW solar array, comprised of PowerLight’s PowerGuard® tiles covers 2,860 square feet on the store’s roof, powers Lunardi’s fluorescent lighting, adds to the thermal insulation and extends the life of the roof. These solar tiles are electrically interconnected to Nextek™ power modules, which feed high quality DC power to the store’s newly retrofitted advanced DC lighting system. This innovative solar electric and lighting system maximizes the usable solar energy produced by the photovoltaic panels and increases the efficiency of power conversion. “As a company focused on harnessing technology to achieve energy conservation and cost savings, solar powered lighting systems made sense both from an economic and an environmental standpoint,” said Paul Lunardi, president of Lunardi’s Supermarket. “In making the decision to light our store using solar power, we’re achieving a balance between Lunardi’s longstanding tradition of quality values and services, while embracing new technology innovations that improve our contribution to the community.” “We applaud Lunardi’s for demonstrating true leadership in the retail industry by committing to clean, reliable and affordable solar power,” said PowerLight President Dan Shugar. PowerLight’s PowerGuard® solar electric roof tile system was selected as the best solar electric technology application for Lunardi’s unused flat roof space. PowerGuard is a patented, lightweight photovoltaic roofing assembly that delivers clean solar electricity to the building while protecting the roof from damaging effects of weather and UV radiation. Additionally, the tiles provide thermal insulation benefits to the building.
