Solar to Australia’s Queen Victoria Market

The Queen Victoria Market could become the world’s largest solar electricity generating station based on plans presented by the Melbourne City Council.

MELBOURNE, Australia – April 10, 2002 [SolarAccess.com] The project’s first phase, which will see the installation of 2000 square meters of solar panels on the roofs of two market sheds, will begin shortly and should be completed by the end of the year. If engineering and heritage issues are met, the entire 10,000 square meters of roof space over the market could be used, making it the biggest PV site of its kind in the world. “Installation will be straightforward, but we will have to work without interrupting the . . . market,” a council spokesman said. Electricity generated by the panels will be sent into the general grid and earn revenue for the council, which said the project’s first phase would produce 220 megawatt hours of electricity a year and save about 200 tons of greenhouse gases each year.
