New Zealand Hydropower Network to Move Forward

2002-03-19 [] Plans for a new, billion-dollar New Zealand hydropower network are moving ahead quickly, with resource consent applications to be filed within three months. State-owned power company Meridian Energy gave an update on the project, named Project Aqua, at a major utilities conference in Auckland last week. The plan would divert water from the Waitaki River through a 62km canal and through six power stations, eventually rejoining the river before it empties into the sea. The project could generate 570 MW of power.
