2002-03-05 [SolarAccess.com] China, host to the 2008 Olympic Summer Games plans to build a 30 kW solar power station next year to support preparations for the event. The facility will consist of photovoltaic panels installed on the roof and walls of the Olympic Stadium. The system, the first of its kind in China with a 30 kW capacity will mainly be used to power the lighting and air-conditioning in the Olympic Stadium. Plans also call for 80 to 90 percent of the street lamps and 90 percent of the water heaters in Olympic Village to use solar power. The games will also use underground thermal power and wind power to meet 20 percent of energy needs at Olympic Stadium.
