Brazil Rains Help to End Power Rationing

Briefly Noted

Brazil’s President, Fernando Henrique Cardoso is expected to announce this week that power rationing will be lifted in regions where most of the country’s people live and industry is based. A six month drought had left the country’s reservoirs, which provide most of Brazil’s power, at dangerously low levels. Recent rains have filled them to safe levels again. Rationing, which initially obliged consumers to cut their power use by an average of 20 percent or face cut-offs, helped Brazil to avoid widespread power blackouts.
