WASHINGTON, DC, US, 2001-08-27 [SolarAccess.com] The renewable energy divisions of the U.S. Department of Energy have captured a number of departmental awards for small business. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy received an award for ‘Outstanding Business Achievement,’ while DOE’s Golden Field Office was recognized for ‘Outstanding and Women-Owned Business Achievement.’ A ‘Special Emphasis Award’ was given to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy for outstanding performance by Headquarters, Golden Field Office and National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The awards were conferred at DOE’s second annual small business conference in June in Las Vegas, attended by 1,000 participants. The ‘Small Business of the Year’ award for 2001 was made to Astro Pak of Oakland, California, a small business contractor for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. “Small business is one of the pillars of economic development in America, and I am proud to encourage the Energy Department’s programs that allow small businesses to play a crucial role in making our government work,” says Energy secretary Spencer Abraham. Astro Pak was recognized for its development and operation of a facility to process laser components for DOE’s National Ignition Facility in California. Astro Pak achieved cleanliness levels measuring five microns in size and established hydrocarbon residues of 0.1 milligram on structures as large as 46 tons.
