California Utility Orders Solar Panels for Municipal Facilities

TROY, Michigan, US, 2001-07-09 [SolarAccess.com] An electric utility in California has ordered 100 kilowatts of solar panels to install on metal roofs and parking shade structures. The Sacramento Municipal Utilities District will purchase the UNI-SOLAR building-integrated photovoltaic roofing panels from United Solar Systems Corp., a joint venture between Energy Conversion Devices and N.V. Bekaert S.A., through the joint venture Bekaert ECD Solar Systems LLC. The solar roofing laminate will be bonded to metal roofing pans and installed on facilities in the Sacramento area. The products will be shipped by the end of August. “This project will showcase the versatility of our building-integrated photovoltaic products to address the California energy crisis and brings us one step closer to turning all roofs into clean power generators,” says Stanford Ovshinsky, Chairman and CEO of United Solar and President and CEO of ECD. “We find many opportunities for the lightweight, aesthetically pleasing and easy to install UNI-SOLAR products in our territory,” explains Dave Collier of SMUD. “SMUD has been a pioneer in the application of photovoltaics on residential and commercial roofs, and its selection of the UNI-SOLAR roofing products is a confirmation of the unique advantages that these products offer,” adds Subhendu Guha, President of United Solar and Bekaert ECD. United Solar develops thin-film amorphous photovoltaic systems and, with ECD, holds patents covering the continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing of multi-junction solar cells and related products. United Solar and Bekaert offer solar electric roofing panels, solar battery chargers, framed power modules and Uni-Kit(TM) Lighting Systems which the company claims offer more energy per watt than conventional solar panels. Bekaert is based in Belgium and manufactures steel wire in 70 production centres around the world and a workforce of 17,000.
