Today, the Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition (OREC) unveiled the first U.S. Marine and Hydrokinetic (MHK) Technology Roadmap. The roadmap describes the issues, challenges and opportunities facing the MHK industry and outlines a clear and logical path to its commercialization. Technologies that capture energy from free-flowing waves, tides and currents represent the potential to provide up to ten percent of U.S. electricity consumption and continue to make advances and gain popularity in coastal communities around the world.

S. 1511 was introduced the day before the Memorial Day recess by Senators Akaka, Murkowski, and Snowe.
Cambridge, Massachusetts-A recent survey conducted by Opinion Dynamics Corporation shows that nearly half of Americans are not aware of the vast potential of generating electricity from the motion of waves, tides, and currents. However, when asked if the federal government should be funding ocean energy projects, seventy percent (70%) of the 900 registered voters contacted by telephone voiced their support. When asked to factor in ocean energy's potential help in reducing America's dependency on foreign sources of energy, eighty-one percent (81%) said that they would be more likely to support increased funding.

Without funding, Energy Freedom is just another word for everything left to lose. U.S. energy security hinges on providing reliable, affordable, environmentally responsible energy resources. We maintain the balance between these three energy priorities by developing and protecting our resource diversity. If we are to "act boldly in Freedom's Cause" and "support essential priorities" our energy policy needs to encourage a diverse energy supply so we are never beholden to or "addicted" to another single fuel source. U.S. energy policy cannot succeed if it is driven by the "flavor of the week" and the funds to be appropriated in next week's budget should include substantial funding for all potential contributors to our energy security, not just a few.

The following News Release was issued by Congressman Jay Inslee's Press Office. U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee and the Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition today announced a milestone in the government's support for the renewable energy potential of oceans through provisions that Inslee included in the House-Senate energy bill. The energy bill's ocean provisions are the most recognition the federal government has given to the potential of ocean power in over 20 years. While Inslee voted against the overall energy legislation due to its significant subsidies for the oil, gas and coal industries, he was able to improve parts of the bill such as including ocean energy as one of the government's priorities. The President is expected to soon sign the energy bill into law.
