Bill Spratley, executive director of Green Energy Ohio, is the 2012 winner of the Charles Greeley Abbot Award, presented annually by the American Solar Energy Society. Frank Kreith, professor emeritus at the University of Colorado, and an early researcher at SERI/NREL, is this year's honoree for the Hoyt Clarke Hottel Award.

The Colorado Convention Center (CCC), site of WREF 2012, has been generating solar power since 2008. The 300kW array on the south roof uses 1,310 230-watt SunPower modules feeding three SatCon three-phase inverters. Installed with a nonpenetrating ballasted rack by Namasté Solar, it provides 14 percent of the building's electricity year-round, and up to 23 percent during air-conditioning season (see the data log at http://siteapp.fatspaniel.net/siteapp/simpleView.jsf?eid=175519). Another 25 percent of the building's electric load is carried by wind power.

AIA, GBCI Approve WREF 2012 for Continuing Education Credits

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Green Building Certfication Institute (GBCI) have each approved more than 30 sessions at the World Renewable Energy Forum (WREF) for continuing-education and learning-unit (LU) credit. The sessions all fall in WREF's Built Environment track.

A one-day workshop---"Engaging Women in Clean Energy Solutions,"---will emphasize energy, poverty, and gender issues in the developing world. The workshop will be held Sunday, 13 May 2012, at the Colorado Convention Center, Denver, Colorado, USA. An intensive focus on energy and gender will jump-start the conference week throughout which the Energy and Gender (EG) Section is organizing technical sessions and forums on energy and gender issues. Dr. Michelle Bachelet, Director of UN Women, has been invited to keynote the workshop and to address the Forum's first plenary session.
